60 years have passed since the release of the iconic film ‘The Sound of Music,’ which captured the hearts of audiences worldwide with its unforgettable songs and touching story. Among the talented cast was Debbie Turner, who portrayed the lovable character Marta von Trapp. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Turner revealed that her exit from Hollywood after the film was not a choice she made willingly.

Unlike some of her fellow child actors, Turner was not a well-known star when she took on the role of Marta at just 7 years old. Reflecting on her experience, she shared, “Angela [Cartwright] was already an established actress beforehand. I wasn’t. I was a TV commercial actress.” Despite her remarkable performance in the film, Turner found herself facing challenges in the industry post-‘The Sound of Music.’
After the film’s success, Turner discovered that Hollywood did not offer her the same opportunities as before. She recounted instances where potential employers seemed unsure how to place her due to her association with the beloved film. Turner expressed, “I just didn’t get jobs.” Consequently, ‘The Sound of Music’ remains her sole major acting credit to date.
Shifting her focus away from acting, Turner pursued her other passions over the years. She delved into sports and art, establishing a design company called Debbie Turner Originals. Her creative talents extended to floral design, where she decorated weddings and even worked on projects for the White House during Christmas. Despite her successful career in floral design, Turner has recently transitioned into a semi-retired lifestyle.
With her husband also stepping back from work, Turner decided it was time to embrace a new chapter in her life. She disclosed, “Now it’s grandkids time!” Married to Rick Larson since 1989, the couple has raised four children and now revel in their roles as proud grandparents to ten grandchildren. When questioned about a potential return to acting, Turner remained open to the idea but emphasized the importance of finding the right project.
Reflecting on the current film industry, Turner acknowledged that finding roles that align with her values and interests could be challenging. She mused, “They don’t make movies that I’d want to ever be in,” highlighting the importance of a wholesome story and talented actors. Despite stepping away from Hollywood, Turner’s willingness to consider future acting opportunities showcases her enduring passion for the craft.

Debbie Turner’s journey post-‘The Sound of Music’ serves as a testament to her resilience and adaptability in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of the entertainment industry.
