In a disturbing case that has shocked the Michigan community, a mother has been taken into custody after allegedly abandoning her three children in appalling conditions. The Oakland County sheriff’s office revealed that on Friday, Feb. 14, during a welfare check at a residence in Pontiac, Michigan, a 15-year-old boy and his two sisters, aged 12 and 13, were discovered living in what was described as “absolute squalor.”
According to authorities, the children were found in a dire state – wearing soiled clothing, with matted hair and overgrown toenails that made it difficult for them to walk. The girls appeared to have been isolated within the home for several years, while the boy slept on a mattress on the floor and the girls on pizza boxes.

The 34-year-old mother was arrested on the same day without incident and is currently being held at the Oakland County Jail. Police were alerted to the situation by the landlord, who had not seen the mother since December, with the last rent payment dating back to October 2024.
Upon entering the residence, law enforcement officers were met with an unimaginable scene – rooms filled with garbage reaching heights of up to four feet, mold, and human waste scattered throughout the premises, with feces even found in the bathtub. The boy informed authorities that he and his sisters had been fending for themselves since 2020 or 2021, having had no contact with the outside world or attended school during this period.
Surviving on meagre supplies of food left at the front porch weekly by their mother or a stranger, the children were deprived of basic essentials like toilet paper and personal hygiene items. Following their rescue, the children were taken to a hospital for evaluation before being placed in the care of a relative under the supervision of Child Protective Services.
Neighbours expressed shock and disbelief at the situation, with one resident, Emma Gross, stating, “Everybody’s upset about this … this is right in our neighbourhood, how could something like this happen?” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard condemned the abandonment and neglect, describing it as “the highest order” he had ever encountered in his career.
In a poignant update, the sheriff’s office announced plans to collect donations for the children, acknowledging the urgent need to support them in their recovery from the traumatic ordeal. Concerned citizens are urged to contribute to help provide essential resources for the children as they embark on their journey towards healing and stability.
Closing the chapter on this harrowing tale, authorities have affirmed their commitment to ensuring justice and safety for the vulnerable victims, while also shining a spotlight on the critical importance of community vigilance in safeguarding the welfare of all children.
