The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) and the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) have confirmed the discovery of a third victim in the tragic multi-vehicle crash that occurred in a Wyoming highway tunnel last week. The incident, which took place on Friday, February 14, sparked a fire in the Green River tunnel along Interstate 80. According to authorities, around half of the vehicles involved in the crash have now been cleared by the WHP as the investigation and recovery efforts continue.

While the names of the victims have not been made public, reports indicate that in addition to the three fatalities, at least five people sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. Troopers from the WHP responded to the scene of the multi-vehicle crash inside the westbound tunnel at milepost 90.2 on I-80, where they confirmed the tragic deaths of two individuals. The tunnel was subsequently evacuated and the area secured by authorities.
The crash, which involved a total of 26 vehicles comprising 10 passenger vehicles and 16 commercial vehicles, led to a chaotic scene with multiple semi-trucks visibly damaged and engulfed in thick, black smoke emanating from the tunnel. Preliminary investigations suggest that the crash occurred in the middle and western sections of the westbound tunnel, resulting in the destruction of six commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles due to the subsequent fire.

The intensity of the fire hindered immediate emergency response efforts, as the conditions inside the tunnel were unsafe for rescue operations. Major James Thomas of the WHP acknowledged the challenges posed by the magnitude of the incident, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to understand the sequence of events leading to the crash. As authorities work tirelessly to clear the remaining wreckage from the tunnel, a width and height restriction has been imposed on the eastbound tunnel lanes, with plans to reopen the passage on February 19.
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon expressed his condolences for the victims and their families, commending the swift actions of the emergency responders who risked their lives to assist those in need. He assured the public of the government’s commitment to providing aid and support to the affected communities, prioritizing safety as the foremost concern in the aftermath of the devastating crash. As the investigation unfolds and recovery operations progress, authorities aim to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
In the wake of this harrowing event, the community remains united in offering prayers and support to those impacted by the Wyoming tunnel crash. The road to recovery will be long and arduous, but through collective efforts and unwavering resilience, the affected individuals and families will find solace and strength in the midst of adversity. The tragic loss of life serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of human existence, urging everyone to cherish each moment and uphold vigilance in promoting road safety for all.
