A trip down memory lane is just a museum visit away as History Colorado presents ‘The ’90s: The Last Decade Before the Future’ exhibit. Offering a nostalgic experience that takes visitors back to the iconic era of the 1990s, this exclusive showcase features a replica Blockbuster store, ’90s hits, and various historical artifacts. The exhibit, which has been running since November 2024, will continue to immerse guests in the essence of the ’90s until October 26 in downtown Denver.

As a staff member of PEOPLE, Rachel McRady had the opportunity to explore History Colorado’s ’90s exhibit firsthand. Stepping into a recreated suburban computer room adorned with a teal blue iMac and a Windows ‘98 installation box, McRady couldn’t help but marvel at the colourful and transparent technology that was prevalent in the ’90s. The exhibit also pays homage to the distinct sounds of the decade, including the infamous AOL dial-up tone and clips from popular TV shows like Today.
Delving into the fashion section of the exhibit, visitors can find a display reminiscent of Olivia Rodrigo’s wardrobe along with iconic pieces from Delia’s catalog. From colour-block windbreaker suits to fashion spreads inspired by Buffy Summers, the exhibit captures the essence of ’90s style. Additionally, the music section features artifacts like Eminem’s jumpsuit and Backstreet Boys’ jerseys, offering a glimpse into the diverse musical landscape of the era.
Sports enthusiasts are in for a treat with a flashback to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, showcasing Team USA tracksuits and memorabilia from notable events like Cal Ripken Jr.’s record-breaking game. However, the most anticipated highlight of the exhibit is the replica Blockbuster store, evoking feelings of nostalgia for many visitors who reminisce about the era of VHS tapes and movie rentals. Walls adorned with classic movie posters and displays of popular films like Titanic transport guests back to a time when Blockbuster was a staple in every neighbourhood.
The exhibit not only serves as a walk down memory lane for those who experienced the ’90s firsthand but also as an educational journey for younger generations who can explore the cultural significance of that era.
