Robin Wright, renowned for her role in the 1987 classic “The Princess Bride,” has recently shed light on why a follow-up film will never come to fruition. Despite the enduring love fans have for the iconic movie, the 59-year-old actress clarified in an interview with AARP’s Movies for Grownups that hopes for a sequel should be extinguished.

During a virtual reunion of the cast, which took place after the film marked 30 years since its release, the topic of a potential sequel surfaced. Wright amusingly pointed out, “Sometime after we hit the 30-year mark, the cast did a Zoom call, and a couple of actors were like, ‘We’ve been asked if we’ll do a sequel,’ and I was like, ‘Well, a lot of us are going to be in a wheelchair.’ So no, no, that will never happen.”
“The Princess Bride” is a tale of a farmboy-turned-pirate on a quest to reunite with his true love, portrayed by Wright, as he navigates through various challenges, adversaries, and allies. For Wright, this film marked a significant breakthrough in her career after her notable role as Kelly Capwell on the soap opera “Santa Barbara.”
Recounting the filming experience, Wright expressed how joyful the atmosphere was on set. The camaraderie among the cast members led to moments of uncontrollable laughter, prompting resets on numerous occasions. Reflecting on the unique bond they shared, Wright reminisced, “Normally, you go to a set, you act, you wrap, and you go back to your hotel room alone. But we took over the hotel, and Cary [Elwes] and I and Rob Reiner and Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest would all have a potluck dinner in the big kitchen. It was going home with people you had fun with to play music, eat good food and commune.”
Even after all these years, the film continues to resonate with audiences. When asked about the most frequently quoted lines from the movie, Wright shared, “I get ‘run, Forrest, run’ from Forrest Gump. Little girls who love The Princess Bride say to me, ‘Hello. As you wish!’ It’s so sweet. Both films are so timeless.”
In a heartwarming reunion in 2020, some of the original cast members, including Wright and Elwes, came together for a virtual reading of the script as part of a Democratic fundraiser. The enduring impact and charm of “The Princess Bride” remain undeniable, cementing its status as a beloved classic in cinematic history.
As fans come to terms with the definitive statement from Robin Wright regarding the lack of a sequel, the legacy of “The Princess Bride” lives on through its timeless storytelling and unforgettable characters.
