Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko, the two young men who had gone missing, were last heard from on September 11 while elk hunting in the Rio Grande National Forest. As the search efforts continued, hope slowly turned into despair for their families and loved ones.

Heartbreak engulfed their families as news broke that the bodies of the two hunters had been recovered, ending the tense wait for any news regarding their whereabouts. Relatives shared the devastating update on a GoFundMe page set up to support the search and rescue operations.
The discovery of their bodies was confirmed by Andrew Porter’s aunt, Lynne Runkle, who expressed the profound sorrow felt by the families. She revealed that the bodies were found by the Colorado Search and Rescue teams, although the identities were not officially confirmed at that time.
The Conejos County Sheriff’s Office subsequently verified the recovery of the bodies of two unidentified men at the Rio de Los Pinos Trailhead. The sheriff emphasised that the investigation was ongoing, with further details pending identification and the notification of next-of-kin.
The two experienced hunters, Porter and Stasko, had embarked on their hunting trip with the intention of enjoying the outdoors. Porter had maintained contact with his fiancée, Bridget Murphy, until September 11, when communication abruptly ceased, raising concerns for their safety.
Deputies were alerted when the hunters failed to check in at a prearranged time, prompting a search operation that culminated in the heartbreaking discovery. The inclement weather added to the urgency of the search efforts, with teams mobilised both in the air and on the ground, alongside canine units and volunteers.
Despite the comprehensive search efforts, hope flickered when Murphy provided an update on social media, indicating that the men had been seen alive after the initial alarm was raised. However, the families’ worst fears were realised when the bodies of Porter and Stasko were eventually located.
The relentless dedication displayed by the search and rescue teams was lauded by Sheriff Garth Crowther, who praised the community’s solidarity and the unwavering commitment of all involved in the search operation.
For Bridget Murphy and the families left behind, the news of the discovery marked the end of their hopes for a positive outcome. Murphy’s unwavering determination and love for her fiancé were evident in her heartfelt messages shared on social media, underscoring the profound impact of the tragedy.
As the community grieves the loss of these two young hunters, the support and unity demonstrated in the search efforts serve as a testament to the resilience and compassion of those involved. The legacy of Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko will be remembered by those who tirelessly searched for them, embodying the spirit of solidarity in times of adversity.
