In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, award-winning director Woody Allen offered a unique perspective on his nearly 28-year marriage to Soon-Yi Previn. The 89-year-old filmmaker spoke candidly about his relationship with Previn, 54, highlighting her qualities as a “disciplined,” “decisive,” “wonderful mother,” and “larger-than-life personality.” Describing Previn as the driving force behind their social and cultural dynamics, Allen noted her approval of his new novel, commenting that she appreciates his “high-falutin” writing style.

Allen’s union with Previn dates back to their wedding in December 1997. The couple shares two daughters, Bechet, 26, and Manzie, 25, whom they adopted. Previn is the adopted daughter of actress Mia Farrow and conductor André Previn. Allen’s relationship with Previn began amidst his time with Farrow, leading to the end of his partnership with Farrow in the early ’90s. Reflecting on his unlikely connection with Previn, Allen shared, “If anyone had told me years ago that I would be married to a girl much younger than me with no background in New York or similar interests growing up, I would have said, ‘No chance.’ But it didn’t work out that way.”
The couple’s public appearances have been infrequent but notable, with sightings at various events over the years. They were recently spotted leaving a restaurant in Beverly Hills, California, following an outing to see Robert Downey Jr.’s Broadway production in September 2024. In a rare red-carpet moment at the Venice Film Festival in September 2023, Allen showcased his film, “Coup de Chance,” alongside Previn and their daughters.
Not devoid of controversy, Allen has faced allegations of sexual abuse, notably featured in the HBO docuseries “Allen v. Farrow.” The documentary shed light on longstanding accusations of abuse from Mia and Dylan Farrow, allegations that Allen vehemently denies. Expressing disappointment in those who choose to believe the claims, Allen remarked on the readiness of people to accept accusations without critical evaluation. In response, Dylan Farrow reiterated her account of abuse, rejecting claims of coaching or brainwashing.
When asked about regrets, Allen alluded to professional missteps but maintained that his focus remains on filmmaking. Reflecting on his body of work, he acknowledged room for improvement, suggesting that only a selection of his movies truly resonate artistically. Despite the challenges and controversies, Allen continues to navigate his personal and professional life alongside his wife, Soon-Yi Previn.
In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Dylan Farrow stood firm in her truth, emphasising that her reports of abuse are rooted in her direct experiences. The ongoing narrative surrounding Allen and the accusations levied against him serves as a reminder of the complexities that can overshadow the private lives of public figures like Allen and Previn.
