The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently announced the recall of over one million Igloo Coolers over fears of finger amputation and other safety issues. The recall, affecting Igloo 90 Qt Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers manufactured before January 2024, was confirmed by the Texas-based company in collaboration with the CPSC.

According to a post on Instagram by Igloo Coolers, the tow handle of the recalled coolers can potentially pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, posing risks of fingertip amputation and crushing hazards. Customers who own the affected coolers were urged to stop using them and check for the manufacturing date code under the cooler to determine if theirs falls within the recalled batch.

The CPSC reported that approximately one million units were recalled in the U.S., with an additional 47,000 units in Canada and 23,000 units in Mexico also included in the recall. The agency highlighted that there had been 12 documented reports of injuries, including fingertip amputations, bone fractures, and lacerations associated with the coolers.
Consumers who own the affected products were advised to discontinue use and contact Igloo Coolers for a free replacement handle. The recall encompasses more than 60 different models of the coolers and various colours, as reported by the BBC.
The affected coolers were sold by several retailers including Costco, Target, and Dick’s, between January 2019 and January 2025, priced in the range of $80 to $140. Additionally, customers could also purchase the products online from platforms such as Amazon and the Igloo Coolers website.
Igloo Coolers had not responded to requests for further information at the time of reporting. For additional details on the recall, consumers were directed to visit the CPSC website for more information and guidance on next steps.
