NFL player Jimmie Ward, who plays for the Houston Texans, will not face domestic violence charges after a grand jury in Montgomery County, Texas decided not to indict him. The decision comes after Ward, aged 34, was arrested in June this year on a third-degree felony domestic violence case brought against him by the mother of his child. The case was dismissed by the grand jury, indicating that no probable cause was found for a criminal offense, as reported by local outlet KPRC-TV.

The alleged victim, who is the mother of Ward’s three-year-old child, had previously accused Ward of violently assaulting her multiple times, both sexually and physically, in the presence of their child. She fled the scene and called the police following the incident. Ward was arrested at his home in Magnolia, Texas, on June 12 on a felony assault family violence charge, according to police records. Currently, Ward remains on the NFL’s commissioner exempt list due to his previous arrest, meaning he is prohibited from attending practices or games, as reported by ESPN.
Following the dismissal of the case, Ward’s attorney, Steve Jackson, expressed their belief that the evidence presented by the defense, along with further information shared by the district attorney, played a crucial role in helping the grand jury reach its decision to not indict Ward. Jackson stated that they see the grand jury’s decision as an exoneration of Ward, asserting his factual innocence in the matter. He also extended gratitude towards NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the Texans organization, and the ownership for their patience throughout the situation.
Jackson highlighted that the dismissal allows Ward to resume his role with the Texans and focus on their ambitions for the Super Bowl, as well as his involvement in the community and charitable activities in Houston. The attorney concluded by thanking everyone who refrained from rushing to judgment and taking action before the case was resolved. The NFL, through spokesman Brian McCarthy, stated that they are monitoring all developments in the matter, which continues to be under review.
In his response to the dismissal, Ward expressed relief and stated that he can now move forward from the incident. For individuals experiencing domestic violence, support is available from the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, offering toll-free and confidential assistance in over 170 languages, accessible 24/7.
This case highlights the complexities surrounding allegations of domestic violence and the legal processes involved in such matters. While Ward’s legal situation has been resolved, the impact of such accusations on individuals and their careers is significant and requires careful navigation. This development serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough investigation and due process in addressing allegations of this nature within the sports and legal frameworks.
