Disney World’s Animal Kingdom is in mourning following the passing of their oldest gorilla, Gino, at the age of 44. Gino had been a cherished member of the Animal Kingdom family since the park opened its doors back in 1998. The news of Gino’s death was shared by Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment Facebook page, where a heartfelt post described the deep sorrow felt by the park. Gino was celebrated for his playful spirit, gentle humour, and role as a devoted father and troop leader.

Throughout his nearly 30 years at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Gino touched the lives of countless visitors, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of meeting him. The park’s post paid tribute to Gino’s legacy, which includes 14 offspring, his contributions to gorilla care and conservation efforts globally, and the lasting memories he created for both staff and guests. Despite his passing at 44, just months shy of his 45th birthday in December, Gino’s story will continue to inspire future generations and remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Dr. Mark Penning, the vice president of Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment division, also shared a tribute to Gino on social media, reflecting on the significant impact the gorilla had during his time at the park. The announcement of Gino’s passing came shortly after the park had celebrated his 44th birthday in December 2024 with a special party for him and his family troop. The festivities included treats and 80s-themed decorations to mark his birth year of 1980, showcasing the care and love Gino received from his keepers.
Gino resided at the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in the Africa Pavilion of the Animal Kingdom, where visitors could observe him in his natural habitat alongside other wildlife such as hippos and zebras. As a western lowland gorilla, Gino represented a species that is critically endangered in the wild due to various threats, including poaching and disease. Disney Parks and Resorts have yet to comment on Gino’s passing, but the outpouring of support and tributes from visitors and staff alike is a testament to the impact he had on all who knew him.
The loss of Gino serves as a reminder of the vital conservation work being done to protect endangered species and the importance of raising awareness about the plight of animals like him. His memory will undoubtedly live on within the Animal Kingdom family and inspire ongoing efforts to preserve wildlife for future generations to enjoy. Gino’s passing has left a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy as the oldest gorilla at Disney’s Animal Kingdom will continue to resonate for years to come.
As we reflect on Gino’s life and the impact he had on those around him, we honour his memory by continuing to advocate for the protection and preservation of all endangered species. Disney World’s Animal Kingdom may have lost a beloved member of its family, but Gino’s spirit and influence will endure as a symbol of hope and inspiration for years to come.
