Golden State Warriors’ star, Stephen Curry, has recently unveiled a pivotal conversation with his wife, Ayesha Curry, that not only shaped his career but also strengthened their bond. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE about his new memoir Shot Ready, Curry, 37, reflected on a crucial decision he faced during his time at Davidson College. The decision not only affected his career path but also cemented his relationship with Ayesha, who is now 36 years old.

During this challenging period, Curry found himself torn between staying in college or pursuing his NBA dream by entering the draft prematurely. Recalling his inner struggles, Stephen shared, “We had just started dating, or about a year and some change in, and I was deciding whether I was gonna go to the draft or not, and, you know, communication, trust, and the whole deal — being able to… I was going through it.”
The dilemma for Curry was whether to leave Davidson College early to pursue his NBA dream or complete his four years at the college, where he cherished the experiences of playing basketball under Coach McKillop. Amidst this uncertainty, Ayesha, whom he had initially met at church in North Carolina during their teenage years, became a pillar of support and guidance for him.
In his own words, Curry shared, “She actually told me to stay in school because of how important finishing my degree was and the whole deal.” Ultimately, Curry decided to forego his senior year at Davidson and enter the 2009 NBA Draft, where he was selected by the Golden State Warriors, marking the beginning of a successful NBA career spanning 16 seasons and including multiple championship wins.
Reflecting on that transformative conversation, Curry expressed, “That conversation and the emotions that I got to share really just established the fact that she was gonna be my biggest supporter no matter what I did.” He emphasised the significance of having a partner like Ayesha who provided unwavering support, allowing them to navigate various life experiences together.
Fast forward to the present day, Stephen and Ayesha Curry are happily married with four children – daughters Riley, 13, and Ryan, 10, and sons Canon, 7, and Caius, 16 months. The couple has not only built a strong family unit but also a lasting partnership founded on mutual respect, communication, and shared values.
In a recent podcast appearance, Ayesha reflected on the same pivotal moment in their lives, revealing that she had initially advised Stephen to “stay in school.” Acknowledging her perspective, Ayesha shared how her upbringing had influenced her advice, being unfamiliar with the opportunities and demands of a professional sports career. Despite her initial stance, Ayesha’s unwavering support for Stephen has been evident throughout his basketball journey.
The open dialogue and mutual respect displayed by the Currys serve as a testament to the strength of their relationship and the values they uphold. As they continue to navigate life’s challenges and successes, Stephen and Ayesha stand as an inspiring example of a couple who support and uplift each other on their individual and shared journeys.
