Experienced Hiker Found Safe After 9-Day Trek in Snowy Mountains

An experienced hiker who went missing during a nine-day hiking and skiing expedition in the mountains in Australia has been found safe, authorities have confirmed. The 57-year-old man, identified as Cameron Little, had set out on his trip but failed to return, sparking a multi-day search operation.
The NSW Police Force announced that Little was discovered safe on Sunday, September 14, near Valentines Hut in the backcountry of the Snowy Mountains in Kosciuszko National Park. Despite being missing for several days, Little did not require any medical attention when he was found.
Officials stressed the importance of being prepared when venturing into the wilderness, reminding the public to ensure they have a fully-charged mobile phone and additional charging devices before embarking on hikes or bushwalks. They also recommended carrying a GPS-enabled Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and submitting a Trip Intention Form with the appropriate agency for added safety.
Little had embarked on his expedition from Guthega Power Station on Thursday, September 4, and was last heard from two days later on September 6. Concern grew among his friends and family when he missed his scheduled return on September 13, prompting a search effort to locate him.
During the search, Little’s Mitsubishi station wagon was located at the Guthega Power Station, but he was not with the vehicle. Multiple agencies conducted a widespread search by land and air in the Snowy Mountains region, where the terrain can be challenging and unpredictable.
Kosciuszko National Park, where Little went missing, is known for its diverse natural landscapes, including rivers, peaks, glacial lakes, and caves. While it attracts outdoor enthusiasts, officials caution visitors to be vigilant and respect the environment, as search and rescue operations are not uncommon in alpine areas due to changing conditions and people overestimating their abilities.
