Tyler Roach, accompanied by his father, was exploring the Sipsey Wilderness in Alabama when he was bitten by the snake. The incident, which Roach described as “one of every hiker’s worst fears,” led to a harrowing ordeal in the remote area.

Roach recounted feeling a sudden sharp pain in his left calf as he walked, only to discover a large Copperhead snake latched onto his leg. With no cell phone signal available, Roach and his father had no choice but to attempt to make their way out on their own. However, Roach’s condition worsened, and he was unable to continue the journey.

Local authorities were informed of the situation in Bankhead National Forest at approximately 3 p.m., prompting a Multi-Agency Search and Rescue (SAR) Team operation. By 11:00 p.m., the team successfully located Roach, who was experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, swelling, and abdominal pain from the snakebite. Following initial treatments on-site, Roach was airlifted to a hospital for further care.

Roach endured allergic reactions to antivenin, extreme dehydration, severe muscle damage, and the threat of kidney failure during the ten-hour ordeal. After five days, he began physical therapy in an effort to recover, anticipating a long and challenging road ahead before he can resume normal activities, including work.

Community support rallied behind Roach, with over $2,300 raised via GoFundMe to assist with his medical costs as he recuperates. Almost two dozen local agencies collaborated in the rescue operation, showcasing dedication and teamwork in ensuring the hiker’s safety. Sheriff Max Sanders expressed pride in the joint efforts, emphasizing the commitment of professionals and volunteers to respond when needed.
