Enrique Padilla, a 21-year-old man from New Mexico, has been handed a 20-year prison sentence for fatally shooting a fellow moviegoer during an argument over reserved seats at an Albuquerque cinema. The incident occurred over a year ago at the Century Rio 24 theater, resulting in the death of 52-year-old Michael Tenorio. Padilla was sentenced by Judge Joseph Montaño after pleading no contest to second-degree murder and two counts of tampering with evidence, reported local outlets KRQE, KOAT, and the Albuquerque Journal.

Padilla faced the possibility of a life sentence if he had chosen to plead not guilty in a first-degree murder trial. The altercation took place in June 2023 when Padilla and Tenorio got into a dispute after Padilla refused to move over one seat so that Tenorio and his wife could sit together during a screening of ‘No Hard Feelings’.
According to reports from the Albuquerque Journal and KRQE, the couple had purchased seats that were apart from each other, prompting a theater employee to suggest that Padilla and his date shift one seat to accommodate the couple. Despite initially agreeing to sit together, Padilla later felt uncomfortable and decided to leave the theater. As he was leaving, Padilla threw popcorn at the Tenorios after hearing them laugh, leading to a confrontation that turned violent.
Witnesses stated that Tenorio, an army veteran, pushed Padilla against a wall before gunshots were fired. Tenorio was struck multiple times and tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Padilla was also hit and later collapsed before being taken to the hospital for treatment. Padilla’s lawyer, Nicole Moss, argued in court that her client, who was still recovering from a previous shooting, felt threatened by Tenorio, leading to the tragic escalation of events.
During the sentencing on February 12, both Padilla and Tenorio’s family members addressed the court. Padilla expressed his apology, while Tenorio’s sister urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence, highlighting the devastating loss suffered by their family. The lack of adequate security measures at the movie theater was also brought to attention, with Tenorio’s wife emphasizing his peaceful nature as a family man who never carried a concealed weapon.
The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the consequences of petty disputes escalating into deadly violence. The courtroom proceedings offered a platform for both the victim’s family to seek justice and the perpetrator to take accountability for his actions. The sentencing marked a point of closure for the families involved, reinforcing the need for peaceful resolutions and respect for others, even in moments of conflict.
