Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, had captured the essence of the American Dream before her life was tragically cut short by a fatal stabbing. Despite facing challenges with the English language, she had managed to form deep connections within her community in North Carolina over the three years since she arrived in the U.S. from Kyiv in August 2022.

Described as a compassionate and helpful individual, Iryna Zarutska had left a lasting impact on the lives of many in her community, both young and old. Her uncle, who chose to remain anonymous, shared insights with PEOPLE about her life and the profound influence she had on those around her.

Zarutska’s uncle revealed that over 100 people attended her viewing and funeral, paying their respects to a young woman who had been the “glue” within her family. Her warmth and kindness had endeared her to many, including residents at the assisted living facility in Huntersville, where she had started working as one of her first jobs.

The journey of Zarutska and her family to the U.S. was driven by a desire to escape the turmoil of war in Ukraine and to build a better life. Witnessing the harrowing conditions in their homeland, they sought refuge in America with hopes of a brighter future. Zarutska’s uncle shared how the family’s determination to thrive in their new surroundings was evident in their every effort.

Tragically, Zarutska’s promising future was abruptly ended when she was fatally stabbed on a light-rail train in Charlotte on August 22. The senseless attack, captured on security video, sent shockwaves through the community and led to the arrest of Decarlos Brown Jr. on charges of first-degree murder. The Department of Justice also charged him with committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Zarutska’s uncle reminisced about her unwavering dedication to her goals. She had steadily progressed from an entry-level position at a local pizzeria to becoming a line cook, earning praise for her work ethic and friendly nature. Colleagues and friends remembered her as an “incredible employee” and a true friend.

Zarutska’s ambitions extended beyond her job at the pizzeria; she harboured dreams of becoming a veterinary assistant and was actively pursuing opportunities to enhance her skills. Her uncle highlighted her passion for helping others and her commitment to learning and self-improvement, noting her continuous efforts to overcome language barriers and expand her horizons.

The profound impact of Zarutska’s untimely death reverberated throughout her close-knit family, leaving a void that could never be filled. Despite the offers of assistance from the Ukrainian embassy to repatriate her remains, her family chose to honour her love for the American Dream by laying her to rest in the land she had embraced as her own.

In the wake of this tragic loss, Zarutska’s legacy lives on through the memories of those who knew and admired her. Her drive, compassion, and determination to carve out a better future serve as a testament to the resilience and spirit of immigrants pursuing their dreams in a new land.
