Manhunt ‘Ongoing’ After Charlie Kirk’s Death at Utah College: ‘Believed to Be a Targeted Attack’

The manhunt for the perpetrator responsible for the targeted shooting of right-wing political commentator Charlie Kirk is still ongoing, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS). Kirk, aged 31, was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University, labelled as a deliberate attack by the DPS. Two individuals initially apprehended in connection with the incident have since been released, with the investigation persisting.

The tragic incident unfolded as Kirk was speaking at a student-sponsored event organised by his non-profit organisation, Turning Point USA, on the university campus. Following the shooting at approximately 12:20 p.m. local time, Kirk was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The DPS, in collaboration with the FBI, the Utah County Attorney’s office, and local law enforcement, is leading the investigation into the case.

Officials disclosed that one suspect, initially in custody and later charged with obstruction by UVU police, has been cleared of involvement in the shooting. A second individual, after being interrogated by law enforcement, was also released. The DPS stated, “There are no current ties to the shooting with either of these individuals. There is an ongoing investigation and manhunt for the shooter.”

The shooting, believed to be a deliberate act, occurred as Kirk manned his customary “Prove Me Wrong” table as part of the American Comeback Tour at the Utah campus. Law enforcement, alongside the State Crime Lab, is actively processing multiple crime scenes linked to the incident, identified based on the trajectories of the victim and the suspect during the sequence of events.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox labelled the tragedy as a “political assassination” during a press briefing in response to the events. The university has implemented immediate measures in response, suspending all classes, campus events, and administrative operations following the incident. UVU expressed shock and mourning over the loss of Kirk, extending condolences to his family and those affected by the tragic event.

Kirk leaves behind his wife, Erika Frantzve, a former Miss Arizona USA, and their two children. The DPS is yet to provide further details as the investigation into the shooting progresses. The shocking nature of the incident has reverberated across the community, prompting a widespread outpouring of support and calls for justice.
