A 24-year-old kayaker, Adrián Simancas, recently shared his harrowing encounter of being briefly swallowed by a humpback whale while kayaking with his father, Dell, in the Strait of Magellan in Chile’s Patagonia region on Feb. 8. The shocking incident was captured on video by his father, who witnessed the whale scoop Adrián underwater before quickly releasing him a few yards away.

In an interview with CNN, Adrián described feeling a wave hitting him from behind before seeing dark and white colors flashing past his face. He recounted the moment when the whale’s mouth closed around him and took him underwater, likening the sensation to being engulfed by a giant fish. Despite the initial panic, Adrián soon felt his water vest pulling him to the surface, allowing him to escape the whale’s grasp.

When questioned if he realized he was inside a whale’s mouth at the time, Adrián admitted that he ‘guessed’ the situation but did not immediately identify it as a whale. The young kayaker humorously mentioned comparisons to the tale of Pinocchio, where Geppetto and Pinocchio escape from a whale’s mouth. Adrián expressed his surprise at the unexpected turn of events and acknowledged that he initially feared for his life but gradually realised he was not in imminent danger.
Adrián credited his survival to the fortunate timing of his father’s 360-degree camera, which captured the entire incident as it unfolded. Dell recalled the shock of seeing his son disappear into the mouth of the whale and the relief of witnessing his emergence from the surface unharmed. Despite the traumatic experience, father and son expressed their intention to continue kayaking together, underscoring their resilience in the face of adversity.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Adrián admitted to worrying about the potential dangers of the encounter, particularly considering their proximity to the enormous marine mammal. His concerns extended to the safety of both himself and his father amidst the uncertainty of the situation. Fortunately, subsequent footage showed Dell reaching Adrián and the pair safely making their way back to land, reaffirming their shared commitment to future kayaking adventures.
The incident involving Adrián and the humpback whale serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters, even in familiar waters. Despite the initial shock and fear, the kayaker’s resilience and quick thinking, combined with his father’s timely actions, ultimately led to a miraculous escape from the jaws of the whale. The remarkable tale of survival underscores the enduring bond between father and son, as they emerge stronger from a brush with nature’s raw power.
