Upon reaching an altitude of 37,000 feet near Creston, Wyoming, Delta Air Lines flight 56, carrying 246 passengers onboard an Airbus A330-941, faced the turbulent conditions. Due to the injuries sustained by passengers, the flight was diverted to Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP) International Airport. Emergency medical technicians evaluated 24 passengers, with 18 requiring further assessment at local hospitals. Details about their conditions were not immediately available.

Of the 10 cabin crew members, two suffered serious injuries, five had minor injuries, and three remained uninjured. Fortunately, none of the three flight crew members were harmed, although the aircraft did sustain minor interior damage. The NTSB report revealed that the left wing of the plane dipped approximately 40 degrees during the turbulence.

Passengers recounted the frightening experience, describing how they were tossed into the air by the turbulent forces, experiencing a gravitational force up to 1.75 times their body weight. Aviation safety consultant Jeff Guzzetti explained that enduring such forces felt like being forcibly lifted and thrown back onto the floor repeatedly.

Leann Clement-Nash, a passenger onboard, shared her account of the chaos, mentioning how people and objects were flung against the ceiling and then crashed to the ground multiple times. The intense turbulence, lasting what seemed like an eternity, left passengers terrified and injured, with some requiring medical attention.

Following the incident, Delta Air Lines reassured that they are cooperating fully with the NTSB investigation to determine the cause of the turbulence and evaluate the crew’s response.
