In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, DNA evidence has linked a man to multiple unsolved sexual assault cases in Arizona dating back to 1994. The authorities have identified the suspect as 55-year-old Abraham Ramirez, who has been indicted on multiple counts related to these heinous crimes.
According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, forensic work carried out as part of the Ventura County Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (VCSAKI) played a crucial role in connecting Ramirez to the unsolved cases. The initiative helped bring long-overdue justice to the victims and shed light on these cold cases.
The earliest unsolved case dates back to 1994 when a woman managed to escape from Ramirez after being sexually assaulted. Despite a sexual assault kit being collected at the time, the case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence. However, advancements in technology have now enabled authorities to link Ramirez to not only the 1994 case but also four other unsolved sexual assault cases in the Phoenix area.
The breakthrough was made possible by testing the victim’s kit under the VCSAKI, with Ramirez’s DNA profile being uploaded to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) by the Ventura County Sheriff’s crime lab. This led to a match with the 1994 case and the subsequent unsolved cases, ultimately resulting in Maricopa County prosecutors filing charges against Ramirez.
Ventura County Sheriff Jim Fryhoff highlighted the significance of pursuing justice regardless of the time that has passed, stating, “This case proves that no matter how much time has passed, we will use every tool available to pursue justice and stand with survivors.” The commitment to testing every sexual assault kit in Ventura County underscores the dedication of law enforcement to seek justice for victims.
