A New Zealand mother is expressing her joy and relief after her three children, who were missing for four years after being abducted by their fugitive father, were found safe and reunited with her. The father, identified as Tom Phillips, was tragically shot dead by police during a shootout on Monday, ending the harrowing ordeal that began in December 2021.

The heart-wrenching saga came to a close when Phillips, who did not have legal custody of the children, was confronted by authorities following a break-in at a local agricultural store. The father and one of his children were involved in the fatal altercation, while the two other children were located unharmed by the police shortly after Phillips was shot.
In an emotional statement to Radio New Zealand, the children’s mother, known as Cat, expressed her immense relief at the safe return of her kids – Ember, Maverick, and Jayda. Cat shared, “First and foremost, we are deeply relieved that for our tamariki this ordeal has come to an end. [The children] have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years, and we are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care.”
While overjoyed at the safe recovery of her children, Cat also conveyed her sadness at the tragic turn of events. She had hoped for a peaceful and safe resolution to the situation. The mother extended her gratitude towards the authorities involved in the operation and offered compassion to a local police officer who was reportedly injured during the altercation with Phillips.
As the family begins the process of reintegration and adjustment, Cat appealed for privacy and understanding as they navigate this challenging period. She mentioned, “As a whānau, we are now attempting to work in cooperation with the relevant government agencies to support the safe return and reconnection of our tamariki. They have endured a long and difficult journey, and we ask for privacy as we help them adjust and reintegrate into a stable and loving environment.”
The four-year ordeal saw Phillips and his children living off the grid, evading authorities and remaining hidden in the densely wooded area near their rural settlement. Despite occasional sightings, the family managed to elude the law enforcement’s efforts to track them down until the recent break-in incident that led to the final confrontation.
Reacting to the news, Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers emphasised that the children’s well-being and mental health support are paramount following their traumatic experience. The community and law enforcement officials are relieved that the children are now safe and receiving the necessary care after their long ordeal in the wilderness.
The successful recovery of the missing children marks the end of a challenging chapter for the family and the community. While the incident had a tragic conclusion with the loss of the fugitive father, the safe return of Ember, Maverick, and Jayda has brought a glimmer of hope and happiness to all involved. The authorities continue to provide support and services to ensure the children’s smooth transition back to a nurturing and stable environment.
