A tragic incident unfolded on Flagstaff Lake in Eustis, Maine, as a pontoon boat carrying seven occupants capsized, resulting in the death of three women. The boat flipped over on Saturday, Aug. 30, leading to injuries among the passengers. Farhana Nasir, 53, and Kiran Akbar, 23, were pronounced dead at the scene, while Noor Nasir, 22, was hospitalized following the accident. Unfortunately, Noor Nasir passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 2, from the injuries sustained during the boat capsizing incident.

Mark Latti, Director of Communications for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, confirmed Noor Nasir’s death in a statement to PEOPLE, emphasizing that investigations into the incident are ongoing. The tragedy unfolded when the pontoon boat encountered difficulties while sailing on Flagstaff Lake. On the fateful day, the group departed from the dock on an 18-foot boat and ventured into the upper reaches of the lake in Eustis. As they approached the beach area of a campground, the bow of the pontoon began to submerge, leading to the boat flipping over approximately 180 feet from shore.
Passersby who witnessed the incident rushed to the aid of the passengers, bringing them to safety on shore. Among the rescuers was retired firefighter Kevin Carter from Massachusetts, who administered CPR to the victims. The remote location of the accident posed challenges for first responders, with emergency services taking 45 minutes to reach the scene. Despite resuscitation attempts, Farhana and Kiran were pronounced dead on-site, while Noor Nasir succumbed to her injuries later in hospital.
John Morris, the 50-year-old boat operator, attempted to prevent the pontoon from sinking by raising the bow, but the efforts were unsuccessful. None of the passengers were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident, and authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a contributing factor to the accident. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the boat capsizing is currently underway to determine the sequence of events that led to the tragic outcome.
The heartbreaking loss of three lives in the boating accident has left the community in mourning, underscoring the importance of water safety measures and the use of appropriate safety equipment while engaging in water activities. As the investigation continues, family and friends of the victims are grappling with the devastating impact of the incident, with support and condolences pouring in from the community.
The aftermath of the boat capsizing tragedy serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of water-related accidents and the critical need for vigilance and precaution when embarking on aquatic excursions. The grieving families of the deceased women are navigating profound sorrow and loss, highlighting the profound impact of such unforeseen catastrophes on individuals and communities. The legacy of Noor Nasir, Farhana Nasir, and Kiran Akbar will endure in the memories of those who knew and loved them, as tributes pour in honouring their lives and the tragic circumstances that led to their untimely demise.
