The New York State Police responded to the crash on Route 5 near Bellinger Road in Danube, a small town in Herkimer County with a population of less than 1,000 residents. The collision took place around 5:37 p.m. local time when 73-year-old Laurie M. Callan, driving a 2012 Dodge, rear-ended the horse-drawn wagon driven by Daniel Stoltzfus.

The impact caused the wagon, connected to two horses, to veer off the road, resulting in all eight passengers being thrown from the vehicle. Simultaneously, Callan’s car flipped over and landed in the opposite westbound lane. Fortunately, despite the violent crash, the driver of the wagon, Stoltzfus, and the other passengers did not sustain any injuries.
Following the incident, emergency services rushed the 6-year-old child, who was riding on the wagon, to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Callan also sought medical attention for her non-life-threatening injuries. Tragically, one of the horses involved in the accident did not survive and was removed from the scene by its owner.
Callan received citations for multiple infractions related to the accident, including following too closely, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision with a horse on the highway, and driving at an unreasonable speed. The New York State Police highlighted that investigations into the incident are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances leading up to the crash and the subsequent consequences.
Incidents such as these serve as stark reminders of the unforeseen dangers that can occur on the roads, particularly in situations involving non-traditional modes of transport like horse-drawn wagons. The authorities are working diligently to piece together the events that took place and to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent similar accidents in the future.

As the investigation progresses, it is hoped that valuable lessons will be learned from this tragedy to enhance road safety for all road users, regardless of the mode of transport they choose.
As details emerge, it is essential for drivers to remain vigilant on the roads, to adhere to safety protocols, and to exercise caution when sharing the thoroughfares with various modes of transportation. The aftermath of this incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need to prioritize safety and attentiveness while driving to prevent such unfortunate accidents from occurring in the future.
