Several employees at a California urgent care facility have recently been terminated for their inappropriate behaviour on social media. The workers were placed on leave after posting a TikTok video that appeared to mock patients’ pap smear discharge. The incident took place at Pesetas Urgent Care in Santa Barbara, Calif., which is a Sansum Clinic facility.

The now-deleted video caused outrage after circulating on Labor Day weekend. In the clip, the employees were seen gathered around a medical chair, seemingly ridiculing what looked like discharge left on exam room paper by a patient. The video was originally posted by a user with the handle @angieuncut, who has since left the organisation.

Sutter Health, the healthcare organisation that oversees the clinic, confirmed the termination of the employees involved. A spokesperson stated that such behaviour is a clear violation of their policies and shows a lack of respect for the patients. They emphasised that protecting the trust of those they serve is their top priority, and any violation of that trust will not be tolerated.
According to reports, the staff members were initially placed on leave within 24 hours of the posts coming to light. Subsequently, they were terminated within an additional 24 hours. Sutter Health highlighted that this incident is currently under investigation as they strive to reinforce their commitment to providing high-quality and compassionate care to all patients.
The TikTok post reportedly included six photos, one of which showed a nurse in pink scrubs giving a thumbs-up while another person in blue scrubs appeared to be making fun of the discharge near a stained exam chair. The caption of the video read, ‘Guess the substance,’ as per the Santa Barbara Independent.
In response to the backlash, the spokesperson for Sutter Health reiterated the organisation’s expectations for all team members to uphold the highest standards of compassion, professionalism and respect towards patients. They mentioned using this incident as an opportunity to revisit and reinforce their comprehensive policies with all team members as part of their ongoing commitment to patient care.
As the public continues to express outrage over the disrespectful behaviour exhibited by the clinic workers, Sutter Health faces the challenge of rebuilding trust and reassuring patients of their commitment to providing quality healthcare services. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding ethical standards and maintaining professionalism in all aspects of patient care.
Moving forward, it is crucial for healthcare organisations to implement strict guidelines regarding social media usage and conduct to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Transparency, accountability, and a patient-centric approach should remain at the forefront of healthcare practices to ensure the well-being and dignity of all individuals seeking medical assistance.
