Taniya Mollah, a 30-year-old woman, recently had an unexpected reaction when she received her engagement photos. Photographer Shelby Cuenca captured the moment when Taniya’s then-boyfriend, Jason Yun, 31, proposed, and the emotions that unfolded were beyond what Taniya could have imagined. “I had no idea how emotional my facial expressions were at the moment!” Mollah tells PEOPLE. “I was completely in shock, so I didn’t even realize what was happening until I saw the photos; my face said it all. That’s the beauty of having a fantastic photographer to capture that special moment. She truly caught every little emotion I didn’t even know was there.”
With a video shared on TikTok on February 4, Taniya reflected on how she expected to react to the surprise proposal compared to how she actually reacted. The post garnered nearly 670,000 views and 125,000 likes, showcasing the raw and authentic moment of the proposal. Yun proposed in January in Atlanta, creating what Taniya described as “a true winter wonderland moment.” Despite his year-long planning, the unexpected snowfall of over three inches added a magical touch to the proposal. Taniya shares, “Jason was freaking out, wondering if he’d have to pull the plug and postpone, but somehow, against all odds, everything fell into place.”
Attending what she believed to be a friend’s wedding, Taniya had no inkling that her own engagement was around the corner. “To be honest, there was a 0.00005% chance of me wondering if it would be a proposal — a woman’s intuition is NEVER wrong, but Jason did such a great job of keeping it a secret,” she says. The couple’s paths crossed in 2022, despite attending the same college, being born in New York City, and living in the same vicinity. Reflecting on their diverse backgrounds, Taniya shares, “I’m Bangladeshi-American, and he’s Korean-American, so we come from two very different backgrounds. I had my worries about navigating cultural differences, but it’s been so worth it. I’m beyond excited to merge our two worlds and continue capturing our love story.”
The engagement photos, while not what Taniya initially expected, hold a special place in the couple’s hearts. “Jason has always embraced how expressive I am, and it’s one of the qualities he loves most about me,” Mollah says. “Honestly, my eyes will always do the talking for me — they never lie, haha.”
