Australian basketball player, Ben Griscti of the Adelaide 36ers, is on the road to recovery after sustaining a fractured vertebrae during a practice session. The 23-year-old player was involved in a harrowing incident when a backboard collapsed on him following a teammate’s dunk at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Arena in Canberra on Aug. 30. Reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Adelaide 36ers basketball team confirmed the unfortunate accident.

The Adelaide 36ers announced in a press release on Sept. 1 that Griscti would be missing the beginning of the NBL season due to the injury sustained during the team’s shootaround at the AIS Arena. Despite the severity of the fracture, Griscti is fortunate not to require surgery for his recovery. Currently, he is receiving treatment at home as he recuperates from the incident.
The incident took a distressing turn as Griscti reportedly had to wait for over 90 minutes for an ambulance to arrive, despite the hospital being merely a five-minute drive away. ACT Ambulance Service chief officer David Dutton acknowledged the delay, mentioning other ongoing emergencies in the territory at that time. The response to Griscti’s case was classified as a priority two non-lights and sirens response, and he was transported to the emergency department in stable condition.
The Adelaide 36ers assured fans that Griscti has returned home to Adelaide and will determine his return to the court after seeking further medical advice on managing his injury. The National Basketball League (NBL) expressed their deep sadness over the incident, extending their support to Griscti, his family, and the Adelaide 36ers. They emphasized that player and staff welfare is their top priority and are collaborating with the AIS Arena to address the matter.
Notably, despite the alarming accident, Griscti remained conscious and alert throughout the ordeal, receiving medical attention from a team doctor until the ambulance arrived. The NBL shared a message from Griscti expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support and assuring fans of his eventual return to the court. The Australian Sports Commission, operator of AIS Arena, also pledged to investigate the incident seriously.
The NBL community continues to rally around Griscti during his recovery, highlighting the camaraderie and sportsmanship that define the basketball community. Fans and well-wishers have been sending messages of encouragement and positivity, underscoring the resilience and determination of athletes in the face of adversity. As Griscti focuses on healing and rehabilitation, the basketball world eagerly awaits his return to the court, showcasing the unwavering spirit and support within the sporting fraternity.
