A heartbreaking incident in Illinois left a 3-year-old boy critically injured after being run over by an “industrial-style lawnmower.” The accident, described as tragic by authorities, occurred on Saturday, Aug. 30, and resulted in a serious lower extremity injury for the young child. The Cary Fire Protection District responded to the scene on West Kristy Lane following a report of a traumatic injury involving the child.

Upon arrival, paramedics discovered that the boy had been run over by the lawnmower, causing severe harm. Before emergency services reached the scene, a neighbour had applied a makeshift tourniquet to help stem the bleeding. Despite this initial aid, the child’s injuries were grave, requiring swift and ongoing medical attention. He was rushed to a local hospital’s helipad and subsequently airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition.
The boy remained hospitalised in an unspecified Intensive Care Unit in Chicago as of August 31, with doctors managing to stabilise him after the traumatic ordeal. According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, initial investigations point towards the incident being a heartbreaking accident. Christopher Covelli, deputy chief with the Sheriff’s Office, explained that the lawnmower involved likely required operators to stand while in use.
Covelli shared that the child had been with his father on the lawnmower, positioned in front of the operator. As the mower started to reverse, the child either fell or jumped off, unfortunately having one of his legs rolled over by the mower deck, causing significant injuries. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by lawnmowers when children are involved, highlighting the importance of ensuring their safety around such machinery.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was reached out to for further comment on the incident, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding this distressing accident.
