Emani Scott, now 33 years old and a mother of two, endured a heart-wrenching separation from her mother and baby sister during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The catastrophic hurricane struck when Emani was just 13 years old, leaving her, her brother, and their grandmother stranded at a West Virginia military base, unsure of the whereabouts of her mother and sister. As the days passed, the family’s hope of being reunited grew faint, with Emani recalling, “We cried and prayed. I thought they’d find my mama and bring her to West Virginia.”

Fortunately, after months of separation, Emani finally connected with her mother and sister over the phone. However, it would be a prolonged two years before they could embrace each other in person. Emani, now an educator and a single mother residing in New Orleans, vividly remembers the harrowing experience they faced at the Moriel Convention Center, where they sought shelter amidst the chaos and devastation. She recalls the unbearable heat, lack of provisions, and the distress of witnessing death around them.
The family’s separation during the evacuation left Emani, her brother, and grandmother in West Virginia, while her mother and sister were airlifted to Texas. The uncertainty and fear of not knowing when they would be reunited weighed heavily on the family. Emani’s relentless search for her mother’s location at the military base and the eventual assistance from a compassionate family in West Virginia marked a glimmer of hope in their journey to be reunited.
The emotional reunion finally took place after two long years, as Emani, her brother, and their mother and sister embraced each other. The bittersweet moment was tinged with the realization that time had passed, and her baby sister was now a young child. Despite the initial hesitation from her sister, Emani expressed profound joy at being reunited with her family. The resilience and strength that sustained them through the years of separation now served as a testament to their unwavering spirit.
Following their reunion, the family relocated back to New Orleans, where Emani’s mother resumed working at a local bar. Today, Emani’s sister is pursuing her education at Drexel University, while her brother has found employment in security at a VA hospital. Tragically, their grandmother passed away in 2010, leaving behind cherished memories of their shared hardships and triumphs.
Emani’s personal journey led her to a career in teaching, earning a master’s degree in secondary education, and currently pursuing further studies in data analytics and programming evaluation. As a devoted single mother raising her two daughters, aged 6 and 8, Emani reflects on their collective resilience, emphasizing, “We’re survivors. We’re strong.” The enduring bond forged through adversity serves as a poignant reminder of their courage and determination.
As Emani shares her remarkable story of perseverance and reunion, her message resonates with the resilience that defines their family’s enduring spirit. Amidst the challenges and trials faced, their unwavering strength and unity stand as a testament to the power of love and resilience in the face of adversity.
