A woman from Los Angeles has fallen victim to scammers who used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to deceive her, resulting in the loss of her life savings. The scammers employed deepfake videos featuring General Hospital star Steve Burton to manipulate the woman into selling her condominium. Abigail Ruvalcaba shared that she received numerous messages, along with deepfake videos, claiming to be from Burton, who has been a part of General Hospital since 1991. She expressed to KTLA, “I thought I was in love. I thought we were going to have a good life together.”

According to reports from KABC, the scammers initiated contact with Ruvalcaba through Facebook Messenger before later shifting the communication to WhatsApp. Initially sending over $81,000, Ruvalcaba eventually went on to sell her family’s condo and hand over the $350,000 proceeds to the scammers. Ruvalcaba’s daughter, Vivian, disclosed that her mother has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Vivian mentioned that her mother trusted the fake Burton when he claimed he needed financial assistance following the destruction of his home in a fire.

One of the messages Ruvalcaba received was quoted by KABC, stating, “The beach house is something we will love, baby.” KTLA highlighted that Ruvalcaba may now face the prospect of having to leave their family home. Vivian shared with the outlet that their family is pursuing legal action to reverse the condo sale, which was subsequently transferred to another owner, as per ABC. Vivian expressed to KABC, “Now she’s in complete debt, and now she’s going to have to file for bankruptcy.”
When Burton was presented with a video that had been sent to Ruvalcaba, he confirmed to KABC, “Sounds like my voice for sure, 100%.” As the actor behind Jason Morgan on General Hospital, Burton had previously issued a cautionary message on social media to warn his followers about the risks associated with similar scams. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of online scams and the devastating impact they can have on unsuspecting individuals.
This distressing ordeal faced by Ruvalcaba underscores the importance of vigilance and awareness when engaging with individuals online, especially in the age of AI and deepfake technology. The emotional and financial toll it has taken on her family serves as a cautionary tale for others to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of online interactions, particularly when financial transactions are involved.
As Ruvalcaba and her family navigate the aftermath of this heartbreaking deception, it is crucial for authorities and online platforms to continue to educate the public about the risks of online scams and to take steps to prevent such fraudulent activities. By sharing her story, Ruvalcaba sheds light on the devastating consequences of falling prey to elaborate online schemes and highlights the need for increased awareness and safeguards to protect individuals from becoming victims of similar deceitful practices.
