An eighth-grade student, Javen Willis, who survived the recent shooting in Minneapolis, shared his harrowing experience during the incident that occurred at the Annunciation Church on August 27. The shooter opened fire at the church, tragically claiming the lives of two children and injuring 17 others. The horrific event took place during the first mass of the school year at Annunciation Catholic School.

The impact of the deadly shooting has deeply affected the young students who were present in the church when gunfire ripped through the stained glass windows. Reflecting on the terrifying moment, 5th grade student Clarrisa Garcia described how she initially mistook the loud sounds for fireworks before realizing the severity of the situation. “I heard something really loud. I thought it was fireworks in the church,” Garcia shared on local channel KSTP. “And then I saw the shooting. And then I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. I’m so scared.'”
Similarly, eighth grader Javen Willis revealed that many of his peers also believed the gunshots and shattered glass were part of a celebratory display. Willis recounted his thoughts during the chaos, stating, “Right when I heard the shots, I knew something was off. A lot of my classmates thought it was confetti and fireworks, but I didn’t think they’d have that during the middle of the church service.” Despite the confusion, Willis acted quickly to protect his friends, instructing them to take cover under the pews.
In a courageous display of quick thinking, Willis prioritized the safety of those around him, saying, “Honestly, at that point, I was just like, ‘I want to keep everybody as safe as possible.’ So I told me and my two buddies to get down and to get under the pew.” He emphasized the importance of staying calm and ensuring the well-being of his classmates amidst the chaos.
Drawing strength from his faith, Willis shared how he turned to prayer during the ordeal. “Right when it happened, I dropped down under the pew like I said, and I prayed. I said my few prayers,” he recalled. His faith provided him with the reassurance that with God’s guidance, he could help protect and comfort those around him.
Accompanied by his mother, Melissa, during a heartfelt interview, Javen and his family expressed the deep impact of the traumatic event. Melissa tearfully described the terrifying moment when she first heard about the shooting, emphasizing the disbelief of facing such a horrific reality. She expressed gratitude for being able to hold her son close after the ordeal, cherishing the opportunity to reassure him of their safety.
Authorities have identified the shooter as 23-year-old Robin Westman, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. Investigations have revealed that Westman’s mother was a former employee at the school, and the shooter had ties to the institution. The tragic incident resulted in the loss of two young lives, underscoring the devastating consequences of senseless violence.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the shooting, survivors like Javen Willis serve as beacons of resilience and courage in the face of adversity. Their accounts shed light on the importance of unity and support in times of crisis, highlighting the strength of individuals coming together to overcome tragedy.
