Renowned rapper Snoop Dogg recently shared his apprehension about LGBTQ+ representation in children’s movies during an appearance on a podcast in August 2025. The artist recounted an incident involving one of his grandchildren asking questions after encountering a same-sex couple in the 2022 film ‘Lightyear’. Snoop Dogg expressed his uncertainty in addressing such topics with his grandchild, highlighting his discomfort with the situation.

During the podcast episode of It’s Giving, Snoop Dogg, aged 53, narrated how his grandson raised queries upon witnessing a family with two mothers in the movie theater while watching ‘Lightyear’. The scene in question featured a character mentioning she has a wife, followed by a brief depiction of the couple kissing and later having a baby son. The rapper admitted feeling unprepared for his grandson’s inquiries, stating, “Y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”
In the midst of the movie, Snoop Dogg’s grandson reportedly turned to him, questioning how a baby could be born from two women. The rapper, taken aback by the interaction, attempted to divert his grandchild’s attention back to the film, encouraging him to continue watching rather than delving into the complex subject matter. However, the persistent queries from his grandson left Snoop Dogg feeling ill-equipped to navigate the discussion.
Expressing his unease with the situation, Snoop Dogg, who is a grandfather to seven children, admitted feeling overwhelmed by the need to address such topics with young audiences. The rapper emphasised his confusion, stating, “It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. … I don’t have the answer.”
The inclusion of LGBTQ+ representation in ‘Lightyear’ sparked controversy in various markets, including countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where the film was banned due to the same-sex embrace depicted. In response to differing reactions, efforts were made to either censor or reinstate the scenes, highlighting the ongoing discourse surrounding diverse representation in mainstream media.
Despite the evolving landscape of inclusivity in entertainment, Snoop Dogg’s comments shed light on the complexities that arise when introducing such themes to younger audiences. As societal norms continue to shift, discussions around LGBTQ+ representation in children’s content remain a subject of debate, prompting reflection on the responsibilities of creators and viewers in navigating these narratives sensitively.
It is essential to consider varying perspectives on the matter, acknowledging the importance of constructive dialogue and education in promoting understanding and acceptance. Snoop Dogg’s candid reflections serve as a reminder of the challenges that can arise when addressing sensitive topics with children, underscoring the significance of fostering open communication and empathy in navigating diverse representations in media.
