Renowned author Helen Fielding recently revealed her close connection to actress Renée Zellweger in the creation of the iconic character Bridget Jones. Fielding, best known for the beloved Bridget Jones’s Diary series, shared with PEOPLE during the premiere of ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ in New York City that she specifically writes the character with Zellweger in mind.

Fielding reminisced about Zellweger’s portrayal of Bridget Jones in the film adaptations of her novels, including the original film released in 2001, along with sequels in 2004 and 2016. The latest addition to the franchise, set to debut on Feb. 13, reunites Zellweger with co-stars Hugh Grant and Colin Firth.

The roots of Bridget Jones date back to Fielding’s column in the British newspaper The Independent in the 1990s, where she first introduced the character as a single woman navigating life in London through a fictional diary. Fielding then transformed this column into her debut novel ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ in 1996, followed by a sequel titled ‘The Edge of Reason’ in 1999.
Reflecting on the unexpected success of the Bridget Jones franchise, Fielding expressed her initial disbelief at the reception of her work. Despite anticipating her column to be short-lived due to its perceived silliness, Fielding was amazed by the enduring popularity and impact of the character she created.
Fielding highlighted the unique appeal of the Bridget Jones series, emphasizing its focus on a relatable female protagonist amidst a landscape dominated by action-packed franchises. She noted the simplicity of the narrative centered around one woman’s perspective, offering a refreshing change in the entertainment industry.
Zellweger echoed Fielding’s sentiments, acknowledging the significance of the Bridget Jones franchise in connecting the cast and crew over a span of 25 years. The actress shared a mix of emotions as filming for the latest installment concluded, describing the experience as both wonderful and bittersweet.
As fans eagerly await the upcoming release of the latest Bridget Jones film, the enduring popularity and cultural impact of the series continue to captivate audiences. With Fielding’s unwavering dedication to crafting stories that resonate with readers, and Zellweger’s heartfelt portrayal of the beloved character, the Bridget Jones legacy lives on, cherished by fans around the world.
