Ted Danson, famously known for his role as Sam Malone in the iconic series ‘Cheers’, recently shared insights on how he managed to avoid being typecast after leaving the show. In a candid conversation with Charlie Day on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, the 77-year-old actor discussed his personal journey and the impact it had on his professional career post-‘Cheers’.

Danson revealed that his personal life took precedence over his professional commitments following his departure from the show. He expressed that at that time, he was more focused on dealing with personal issues rather than the thought of leaving his beloved character behind. The actor shared, “First off, the transition was easy ’cause I blew my personal life up so badly in that moment of leaving that it didn’t even dawn on me that I had quite left Cheers for months ’cause I was just dealing with myself.”

The seasoned actor explained that his decision to leave ‘Cheers’ was motivated by a desire for personal growth and exploration. He saw it as an opportunity to make positive changes in his life and challenge himself with different roles. Danson mentioned, “I was changing for the better and working really hard at that, so I thought, ‘Might as well jump completely off the cliff.’ And [there was] a little bit of… if I don’t leave now, I may not know if I could do anything else and I wanna see if I can do any other stuff.”
Offering advice to Day on navigating life after playing a well-known character, Danson emphasised the importance of focusing on one’s craft and working with creative individuals. He highlighted the significance of surrounding oneself with talented professionals and continuing to challenge one’s artistic capabilities. Danson commended Day for his collaboration with acclaimed directors like Guillermo del Toro and Ethan Cohen.
Reflecting on his experience portraying Sam Malone, Danson shared that his approach to the character was rooted in unconditional love for the diverse personalities in the bar. He believed that this perspective allowed him to transition out of the role more smoothly compared to some of his co-stars. Danson’s portrayal of Sam Malone captivated audiences for eleven seasons, from 1982 to 1993.
In contrast, Day has embodied the character of Charlie Kelly on ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ since 2005, showcasing his versatility and longevity in the television industry. Despite the challenges of being associated with a particular character, both actors have demonstrated resilience and a commitment to evolving their craft beyond their iconic roles.
As Ted Danson continues to navigate his post-‘Cheers’ career, his story serves as a testament to the importance of personal growth and artistic exploration in the entertainment industry. By sharing his experiences and insights, Danson inspires fellow actors to embrace change, challenge stereotypes, and pursue their creative ambitions beyond the confines of typecasting.
