Renowned author of the Bridget Jones series, Helen Fielding, expressed her remorse over the fate of the beloved character Mark Darcy, portrayed by the British actor Colin Firth, in the latest instalment, “Mad About the Boy.” The character’s demise in the story has left Fielding feeling guilty, as Mark only exists in Bridget’s imagination in the new film. During the premiere of the movie in New York City, Fielding humorously confessed to PEOPLE that she will “never forgive” herself for “killing” off the character.

Fielding, aged 66, explained that the death of Mark Darcy four years prior to the events of the new film, was simply how the story unfolded, stating, “It was just the character that was killed, and it wasn’t my fault really. It was just what happened in the story.” This revelation was made at Jazz at Lincoln Center during the event on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
