King Felipe of Spain recently cut his summer vacation short to attend to a pressing national emergency back home. The monarch, along with his family, had been enjoying a getaway in Greece when they received news of the extreme wildfires that were devastating the northwest region of Spain. Despite being on holiday, King Felipe immediately flew back to Spain to address the situation.

Reports indicate that up to 20 major fires have been raging in the Galicia region of Spain, as well as in neighbouring Portugal. These fires have already burned an estimated 390,000 acres of land and tragically led to at least three deaths within the span of a week. Upon his return, King Felipe visited the Headquarters of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) at the Torrejón Air Base, where he was briefed on the severity of the situation.

The King’s presence prompted the deployment of an additional 500 soldiers to join the efforts in combating the wildfires, bringing the total number of personnel to 1,900. In an Instagram post, King Felipe expressed his gratitude towards all those involved in the firefighting operation, including military personnel, civilians, and volunteers, for their hard work in protecting the population and extinguishing the fires.
The European Union has also lent a helping hand by dispatching firefighting forces to assist Spain during this crisis. The wildfire situation is not unique to Spain, as several other countries in southeastern Europe, such as Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Albania, are also grappling with similar challenges.
Sources from Zarzuela Palace revealed that King Felipe has been in communication with the presidents of the regions most affected by the wildfires, as well as the Spanish government, to coordinate necessary actions. Prior to their holiday in Greece, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, accompanied by their daughters Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia, had been enjoying a summer retreat in Mallorca.
Princess Leonor, who is undergoing military training, was recently promoted to the rank of Midshipman of 2nd grade, as she prepares to follow in her father’s footsteps to ascend to the Spanish throne. Meanwhile, Princess Sofia is set to embark on a journey of studying Politics and International Relations at Forward College, with a three-year programme spanning multiple European cities.
The Spanish royal family’s decision to return to Spain in the face of a national emergency showcases their dedication to serving the country and prioritising the wellbeing of its citizens. King Felipe’s prompt action and leadership during this crisis highlight the importance of unity and solidarity in times of adversity.
In conclusion, the resilience and commitment exhibited by King Felipe and his family serve as a testament to the strength of the Spanish monarchy in times of need. Their sacrifices and efforts to support the firefighting operations and assist those affected by the wildfires demonstrate a true sense of duty and responsibility towards the nation.
