A daring surfer managed to escape unscathed after a terrifying encounter with a shark that left his surfboard in tatters. The incident occurred on a Monday morning at Cabarita Beach in New South Wales, Australia. Brad Ross was out surfing around 7:30 a.m. when a great white shark attacked, taking a sizable bite out of his board. Although Ross emerged from the water without a scratch, his surfboard was left in two pieces, with a significant chunk missing from the foam. This encounter comes on the heels of another shark attack at the same beach not long ago when a 16-year-old boy was also targeted by a shark.

Witnesses captured the dramatic incident on video and shared it on social media. In the footage, Ross can be seen struggling in the water as the shark viciously attacks his board. Fortunately, lifeguards swiftly closed Cabarita Beach after the incident was reported, ensuring the safety of beachgoers. The 5-meter shark responsible for the attack was later caught and released. Authorities from Surf Live Saving NSW confirmed that while the surfboard bore the brunt of the attack, Ross himself remained unharmed.

Officials from the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre revealed that the emergency call reporting the shark encounter sparked an immediate response. Lifeguards acted promptly to close the beach, and warnings were issued to prevent people from entering the water. Moreover, surveillance drones were deployed as an added safety measure to monitor the beach throughout the day.
Local authorities, including the NSW Police and the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, swiftly responded to the incident. Their quick action helped ensure that there were no injuries resulting from the shark attack. Dave Rope, from Surf Lifesaving Far North Coast, emphasised how fortunate Ross was to escape unscathed, describing the attack as a “savage bite”. Observers at the scene, such as yoga teacher Kym Falvey, recounted the harrowing moment when the shark bit down on Ross’s board, causing it to disintegrate in the water.
The incident serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers lurking in Australia’s waters, particularly for surfers and swimmers. Following this alarming event, there is a heightened sense of vigilance among beach authorities and visitors alike. Despite the ferocity of the attack, the fact that Ross emerged without any injuries has been hailed as nothing short of miraculous. The community at Cabarita Beach is undoubtedly grateful that this incident did not result in any casualties, highlighting the unpredictable nature of encounters with sharks in the ocean.
This harrowing ordeal underscores the importance of marine safety protocols and the need for ongoing awareness about sharing the waters with these apex predators. While Ross’s brush with danger ended without harm, it serves as a potent reminder of the inherent risks that come with enjoying the ocean’s beauty. As authorities continue to monitor the situation and beach safety measures are reinforced, beachgoers are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant while enjoying the surf at Cabarita Beach and beyond.
