In a recent development, actress Blake Lively has taken a significant step in her legal battle against director Justin Baldoni. Lively’s legal team has issued subpoenas for Baldoni’s phone records and those of his associates, with the aim to uncover and ‘expose’ an alleged smear campaign orchestrated against her.
The feud between Lively, 37, and Baldoni, 41, has been ongoing, with Lively accusing Baldoni and others of sexual harassment and launching a retaliatory public smear campaign against her in a complaint filed last December. In response, Baldoni filed a $400 million lawsuit against Lively, her husband Ryan Reynolds, publicist Leslie Sloane, and Sloane’s PR firm, citing claims of civil extortion and defamation.

As the case, titled Lively v. Wayfarer Studios et al., is set to go to trial on March 9, 2026, Lively’s lawyers have now taken a strategic move by filing subpoenas to uncover the individuals, tactics, and methods employed in what they claim was an attempt to tarnish Lively’s reputation and family over the past year.
The subpoenas, sent to telecommunications giants AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, target phone records belonging to Baldoni, publicist Jennifer Abel, crisis management expert Melissa Nathan, and others allegedly involved in the smear campaign against Lively. Additionally, subpoenas were also directed at Cloudflare, Inc. and AOL for Internet records in a bid to shed light on the digital aspects of the alleged retaliation plan.

According to Lively’s spokesperson, the obtained records could provide crucial evidence regarding the timeline, operation, and key players in the alleged smear campaign. Moreover, the legal team is keen to investigate the role of crisis-management expert Jed Wallace, who is said to have been involved in the campaign against Lively.
Bryan Freedman, Baldoni’s lawyer, has dismissed the subpoenas as a standard part of the legal process but criticised the extensive nature of the requests, labelling them as a ‘massive fishing expedition’ driven by baseless claims. Freedman stated that the effort to uncover evidence to substantiate the allegations would be futile.
In a tit-for-tat legal manoeuvre, Lively’s lawyers have expressed their determination to delve deeper into the activities of those linked to the smear campaign. They have signalled their readiness to scrutinise Wallace’s business practices as part of their investigation into the alleged harassment and retaliation faced by Lively.
As the legal battle ensues, both parties continue to stand their ground, with Lively’s team asserting their commitment to uncovering the truth behind the allegations, while Baldoni’s camp maintains that the claims against them are without merit. The upcoming trial is likely to shed further light on the intricate details of this high-profile confrontation.
The courtroom drama between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni underscores the complexities of legal battles within the entertainment industry. With reputations and livelihoods at stake, the pursuit of justice remains paramount for both sides as they navigate the legal intricacies of this contentious case.
