In terms of first impressions, Consuelos shared that he found Ripa “hilarious” and “adorable” when he first laid eyes on her in the rehearsal hall wearing “big curl rollers.” Initially, his focus was not on romance but on securing his role as Mateo Santos in the soap opera.
Having come to the audition from Tampa, Consuelos shared how challenging it was for him to even consider making any moves on Ripa at that time. He explained, “The thought of me making the moves on anybody was absolutely out of the question. The whole thing was absolutely mind-boggling to me. I knew I wanted to get this job because it would change my life.”
Despite both being in separate relationships during that period, Consuelos admitted to being captivated by Ripa’s beauty. He described her as having beautiful eyes, specific cheekbones, amazing hair, and great lips that caught his attention.
During their time working together, Consuelos mentioned that his feelings started to shift when Ripa offered to run lines with him for his role re-audition. “The beginning of the tremors beneath the surface, where you start feeling some different things like ‘woah, what is this?’ began when she offered to run lines with him,” he explained.
The actor fondly recalled a moment when Ripa answered the door to her apartment in a robe as he arrived to run lines. He vividly described the scene of Ripa in high heels and perfectly fitting jeans, holding a cup of coffee and smoking a cigarette, exuding a Parisian, editorial vibe.
