A man has been taken into custody on charges of cyberstalking after reportedly harassing a family member of the deceased UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson. Shane Daley, a 40-year-old resident of Galway, New York, is accused of sending threatening voicemail messages to a relative of Thompson, who was tragically killed in a shooting incident outside the Hilton Midtown in Manhattan on December 4, 2024.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed Daley’s arrest, revealing that he had been charged with cyberstalking for his alleged actions. According to authorities, Daley expressed satisfaction over Thompson’s death and even went as far as suggesting that Thompson’s children deserved a similar fate. The arrest comes in the wake of ongoing investigations into the murder of Brian Thompson, who was fatally shot in the early hours of that fateful day.
Luigi Mangione, another individual previously arrested in connection with Thompson’s murder, has since faced multiple charges, including murder and terrorism. The DOJ press release stated that Daley had made multiple threatening calls to a work phone line belonging to a member of Thompson’s family just hours after the CEO’s tragic demise in Manhattan. The voicemail messages allegedly contained menacing language, specifically targeting Thompson’s killing and expressing a desire for his family to suffer a similar fate.
Brian Thompson was survived by his wife, Paulette “Pauley” Thompson, and their two children. Reports indicate that Daley’s voicemails contained profanity-laden threats towards Thompson’s family members, heightening their emotional trauma in the aftermath of his death. Acting United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III condemned Daley’s alleged conduct, emphasising the need for accountability for such malicious actions that add to the victims’ pain and suffering.
Jay Clayton, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, echoed similar sentiments, denouncing Daley’s behaviour as insensitive and harmful. Clayton highlighted the importance of prosecuting individuals who seek to intimidate and harass victims and their families during times of vulnerability. The severity of the charges against Daley include a potential five-year prison term, a fine of up to $250,000, and supervised release for up to three years.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also weighed in on the matter, with Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia expressing concerns over Daley’s alleged actions. Raia described Daley’s harassment as not only callous but also threatening to a bereaved family already grappling with the loss of their loved one. The FBI reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of individuals and holding accountable those who engage in stalking and harassment.
As the case unfolds, the FBI and DOJ are expected to provide further updates on the investigation into Shane Daley’s alleged cyberstalking activities. Efforts to reach out to Daley’s legal representation for comments have been made, with additional information anticipated in the coming days. The implications of cyberstalking and online harassment in the context of criminal investigations underscore the need for stringent measures to protect individuals and their families from such malicious behaviour.
