A devastating incident has unfolded on Lake Oconee in Georgia, where a woman has been found deceased, and a man remains missing, following the discovery of an empty boat. Joycelyn Nicole Wilson, a 49-year-old from Atlanta, was located lifeless on Sunday, Feb. 9, as reported by officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to PEOPLE. This grim discovery came after a boat was found circling near Wallace Dam on Saturday, Feb. 8, with witnesses recalling two individuals, one male and one female, aboard before the vessel was found abandoned.

The search continues for the missing individual, identified as communications specialist and coach Gary Jones by Westminster Schools officials, according to reports from FOX affiliate WAGA and ABC affiliate WGXA. Wilson and Jones were college acquaintances from Clark Atlanta University and had reconnected, with reports indicating they were engaged. A childhood friend disclosed to CBS affiliate WANF about their previous relationship. Wilson had been a dedicated instructor at Spelman College in Atlanta since 2007, holding the position of senior instructor for the Department of Mathematics.

Spelman College expressed profound sorrow over Wilson’s passing, acknowledging her significant contributions to both students and colleagues. Her work extended beyond the college’s walls as she also co-led the Mathematics Research and Mentoring Program, focused on encouraging African-American women to pursue advanced mathematical studies or careers. Her biography highlights her commitment to empowering women of color in the mathematical realm, both within and beyond Spelman College.
Jones, on the other hand, served as the varsity girls and boys track and field coach at Westminster, a private Christian educational institution. The school community rallied in support of Jones and his family during this trying time, emphasizing their prayers for his safe return. While Westminster Schools and Spelman College have not yet provided comments in response to inquiries, search efforts have been ongoing with the use of SONAR technology in the lake, facilitated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Unfortunately, adverse weather conditions have posed a challenge to the search mission, as reported on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Game wardens have cited inclement weather, including rain and wind, as hindrances to the search operation, underscoring the need for favourable weather conditions to resume the search. The community remains hopeful for a positive outcome amidst these distressing circumstances.
