A frightening incident unfolded mid-air when smoke filled an aircraft cabin after a phone charger caught fire during a flight. The terrifying event occurred on a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight from São Paulo to Amsterdam on August 5th. Passengers on board were left alarmed as the cabin became enveloped in smoke, creating a tense and alarming situation.
Brazilian journalist Simone Malagoli happened to be on the flight and managed to capture video footage of the cabin filling with smoke due to the phone charger catching fire. The visuals depict passengers trying to protect themselves by covering their faces with cloths and tissues while flight attendants are seen donning smoke hoods as they tackle the situation with a fire extinguisher in hand.

Describing the experience, Malagoli mentioned, “It was one of the tensest flights of my life – perhaps the most.” The urgency and gravity of the situation were evident as the crew swiftly reacted to extinguish the burning power bank, following safety protocols to regain control of the flight. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries as the flight proceeded safely to its destination in Amsterdam.
The use of lithium batteries, commonly found in portable chargers like power banks, has been linked to several emergency incidents aboard planes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has documented numerous lithium battery-related incidents over the years, emphasizing the potential dangers associated with these batteries. Thermal runaway, a phenomenon where a battery malfunctions due to damage, overheating, or other factors, poses a significant risk.
In response to such incidents, airlines have been implementing stricter policies regarding the use of portable charging devices onboard. Southwest Airlines recently announced a ban on using portable charging devices while stored in bags or overhead bins during flights, requiring them to be visible and in use. Similarly, Emirates decided to prohibit the use of power banks onboard their flights starting October 1, 2025, to enhance safety measures and reduce risks associated with lithium batteries.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of airline safety protocols and passenger vigilance when it comes to electronic devices. The quick and efficient response of the flight crew in managing the situation underscores the critical role played by trained personnel in ensuring the safety of all passengers onboard. As technology continues to advance, it is crucial for airlines and passengers alike to stay informed and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
In light of this event, the aviation industry is likely to review and update safety measures concerning electronic devices and lithium batteries to mitigate potential risks. Passengers are encouraged to stay attentive and promptly report any signs of overheating, smoking, or burning related to their devices while on board. By fostering a culture of safety and awareness, the aviation sector aims to uphold its commitment to ensuring the well-being of everyone onboard.
