Dean Final, a 32-year-old man from Leicester, England, faced his fate in court this week as he was sentenced to 11 years and eight months in prison for a series of heinous crimes, including rape, controlling behavior, and assault. The Crown Prosecution Service revealed that Final had admitted to physically, sexually, and emotionally abusing two former partners.
The shocking case unfolded as Final’s disturbing actions came to light. The prosecution detailed how Final had engaged in controlling behavior towards one of his partners, leading to a violent attack in February 2024. After the victim confronted Final about his controlling nature, he proceeded to strangle and rape her. He went on to restrict her movements by stealing or hiding her belongings, installing cameras in their home, and bombarding her with accusations of infidelity.

Over the course of two harrowing nights, Final continued to subject the victim to sexual acts against her will, creating an environment of fear and coercion. Eventually, the victim managed to escape and report the abuse to the authorities. Detective Constable Caitlin Duggan of Leicestershire Police highlighted Final’s attempts to exert complete dominance over his victim, showcasing his manipulative and controlling tendencies.
During the investigation, a chilling detail emerged – the victim claimed that Final appeared to be asleep with closed eyes while committing the rape. This led to speculation that Final might attempt to use the defense of “sexsomnia,” a controversial sleep disorder where individuals allegedly engage in sexual acts while asleep. However, the prosecution quickly discredited this claim, presenting expert testimony and evidence to refute the notion that Final’s actions were unconscious.

The defense’s argument of “non-insane automatism” based solely on the victim’s observations failed to hold up in court, as no medical expert opinion or diagnostic testing supported Final’s supposed condition. Prosecutors demonstrated that Final’s deliberate actions, such as retrieving a sex toy during one of the attacks, were inconsistent with someone in a sleep-induced state, further dismantling his defense.
In a pivotal moment, Final entered a guilty plea, accepting responsibility for his abhorrent actions. In addition to the rape charges, Final was found guilty of assault, controlling and coercive behavior, non-fatal strangulation, and criminal damage related to a separate incident involving another former partner in Lancashire. The Crown Prosecution Service remarked that Final’s sentence, accompanied by restraining and sexual harm prevention orders, ensures he can no longer harm women.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of domestic violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes. The legal proceedings against Final reflect a step towards justice for the victims and a condemnation of his violent and manipulative behavior. The sentencing not only serves to protect the community from a dangerous offender but also sends a clear message that such acts of abuse will not be tolerated.
If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault or abuse, support is available through resources like the National Sexual Assault Hotline or Crisis Text Line. Seeking help and speaking out against abuse are vital steps towards healing and accountability. The conviction of Dean Final stands as a testament to the power of survivors’ voices and the unwavering dedication of law enforcement and prosecutors in pursuing justice for victims of violence.
