Police Conclude Investigation into Tragic Death of 9-Year-Old at Water Park Wave Pool

The Derry Township Police Department recently wrapped up its investigation into the heartbreaking death of 9-year-old Sophia Subedi at Hersheypark’s water park in Pennsylvania. Sophia tragically drowned in the wave pool on Thursday, July 24. After thorough scrutiny of video footage, statements from witnesses and employees, and examination of the scene, the police confirmed there was no criminal activity involved on the part of Hersheypark or its staff.
The incident occurred shortly before 6:46 p.m. local time, prompting a swift response from emergency services. The police department’s findings indicated that Sophia’s death was a result of accidental freshwater drowning, aligning with the official report from the Dauphin County Coroner’s Office. Authorities highlighted that safety procedures at Hersheypark were diligently followed, with the number of individuals in the wave pool well below its maximum capacity at the time of the tragedy.
Additionally, testimonies revealed that nearby witnesses and lifeguards promptly intervened, initiating rescue and resuscitation efforts almost immediately upon noticing Sophia’s distress. The Derry Township Police Department, alongside park employees and first responders, expressed their heartfelt sympathies to Sophia’s family, friends, and the Bhutanese community during this difficult period.
Sophia, who hailed from Columbus, Ohio, moved to Harrisburg with her family in 2022. The vibrant and compassionate 9-year-old had dreams of becoming a teacher and had just completed third grade at North Side Elementary School. Tilak Niroula, a representative from the Bhutanese Community in Harrisburg, described Sophia as a “bright, kind, and loving” individual who brought joy to everyone she encountered.
During her visit to The Boardwalk at Hersheypark, Sophia found herself in distress within the wave pool, despite the presence of ten trained lifeguards dedicated to that specific area. Efforts to save her proved unsuccessful, and she was rushed to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center but unfortunately did not survive. In response to her tragic passing, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to provide financial support to her grieving family, raising over $30,000 thus far.
Sophia’s fond memories live on through the recollections of those who knew her best. The fundraising message shared sentiments of her brilliance, curiosity, and compassion, capturing a snapshot of her affinity for dancing, evening strolls, and singing Nepali songs with her loved ones. Plans are underway to honour Sophia’s legacy by supporting child safety initiatives and creating a safe space in her name, fostering love and connection for children and families.
A poignant funeral service was held on July 30 to commemorate the life of this beloved young soul. As the community continues to mourn her untimely loss, thoughts and prayers are extended to Sophia’s family as they navigate this profound grief.
