Kevin Thompson, the talented actor known for his role in the 1983 Star Wars film Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, recently shared insights into his experience wearing the iconic Ewok costumes. In a candid interview on the Pod Meets World podcast, Kevin revealed the challenges he faced while portraying not just one, but 20 different Ewoks in the beloved movie.
Describing the process of donning the Ewok costume, Kevin expressed how uncomfortable and physically demanding it was. “The suits were very tough,” he remarked, emphasizing that they felt like “little bears, space bears.” The elaborate costume consisted of layers of padding, fur coat, latex feet, hands, and a mask with plastic eyes that would often fog up during filming.

As the main stunt performer for the Ewoks, Kevin revealed that he played a crucial role in the battle scenes. “I’m 20 different Ewoks. I’m in all the battles,” he explained. One of his notable Ewok characters, Chubbray, was easily identifiable by the distinctive white hair around one eye. Kevin’s background in gymnastics, wrestling, and mime proved to be instrumental in landing him the role of the agile Ewoks.

Despite his impressive resume, Kevin admitted that he had initially been unaware that he was auditioning for a Star Wars sequel. It was only upon arriving in London for filming that he realised the magnitude of the project. “I didn’t know until I got to London,” he recalled. The presence of iconic actors like Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher confirmed to him that he was part of something extraordinary.
In addition to his work on Return of the Jedi, Kevin shared that he had also appeared in the movie Blade Runner alongside Harrison Ford. He recounted a serendipitous encounter with director Ridley Scott, which led to him portraying three different characters in the film. This serendipity seems to be a recurring theme in Kevin’s career, as he also found himself involved in Boy Meets World thanks to a chance connection with director John Tracy.
Together with his wife Tracey McCoy Thompson, Kevin detailed his journey working on Boy Meets World and other memorable projects in their book titled “My Journey to Endor.” Tracey, a supportive partner in Kevin’s career, diligently chronicled his experiences on set. Their shared passion for storytelling has allowed them to connect with fans and share behind-the-scenes anecdotes that resonate with audiences.
As Kevin continues to reflect on his diverse acting roles and memorable experiences in the entertainment industry, his dedication to his craft and his unwavering passion for storytelling shine through. Despite the challenges and discomfort he faced wearing the Ewok costume, Kevin’s commitment to bringing characters to life on screen remains unwavering.
In conclusion, Kevin Thompson’s journey from a versatile performer to an iconic figure in the Star Wars universe is a testament to his talent and perseverance in the face of adversity. His candid revelations about the trials of wearing the Ewok costume only add to the depth of appreciation for his craft and his enduring legacy in the world of cinema.
