Tragedy struck at the Powder Horn Campground on Cascade Road in Old Orchard Beach, Maine when a camper exploded, claiming the lives of two women who were celebrating one of their birthdays. The devastating incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, July 26, resulting in severe burn injuries for the victims.

The victims have been identified as Alesia Ventura-Large, aged 58, from Marlborough, and Nancy Pilsch, aged 57, from Leominster, both hailing from Massachusetts. The pair tragically succumbed to their injuries at Maine Medical Center in Portland on Sunday, July 27.
The Maine State Fire Marshal is actively investigating the cause of the explosion, with preliminary findings suggesting that liquid propane gas had been leaking into and beneath the camper before the blast occurred. Fire officials believe that the gas ignited when one of the occupants lit a candle inside the camper.
Reports indicate that the two women had lit the candle to mask a pungent “garlic smell” present inside the camper. It is suspected that the leaking gas may have originated from a stove within the camper, as a knob on the appliance was discovered in the “on” position by officials.
John Large, husband of Alesia Ventura-Large and a priest, fondly remembered his late wife as a “wonderful woman” who exuded sensitivity and brightness wherever she went. He expressed his deep love for her, highlighting the light she brought into his life.
Tragically, there was no gas detector present inside the camper at the time of the explosion. The Powder Horn Family Camping Resort, where the incident occurred, acknowledged the tragic event in a heartfelt statement on their Facebook page, extending their condolences to the families of the deceased.
This unfortunate incident serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of gas safety measures while using recreational vehicles. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Alesia Ventura-Large and Nancy Pilsch during this difficult time.
The investigation into the exact circumstances of the explosion and any further contributing factors is ongoing, as authorities strive to piece together the events leading up to the tragic loss of these two women. May their souls rest in peace as their memories live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
