An Oklahoma couple recently experienced a heartwarming and life-saving moment outside Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Ashton Buchanan went into labour unexpectedly just outside the hospital, with her water breaking on Friday, Feb. 7. As her husband, Seth, hurried to get help, they found themselves needing urgent assistance before they could reach the hospital’s entrance. Despite the rush, they were met with the quick actions of a heroic security guard who came to their aid.

Ashton described the intense moment, saying, “I kept telling him the baby’s coming out. He was like, ‘Honey, that’s impossible.’ I was like, ‘I’m not pushing, it’s already pushing.’” In a stroke of luck, security guard Marricco Edmundson was on hand and stepped in to assist. When Seth found a wheelchair and flagged down Edmundson, the guard noticed that the baby was coming quickly. With his training as a Tulsa firefighter and EMT, Edmundson acted swiftly as the baby arrived.
The security guard recalled the moment he helped deliver the baby, saying, “I could see the head coming out even faster, and this time I went to cradle the head, and as I cradled the head, the shoulders came out and the whole body just dropped in my hands.” Not only did Edmundson assist in the delivery, but he also noticed that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck three times. With a calm demeanor, he carefully unwrapped the cord, allowing the baby to take its first breath and cry.
After the successful delivery, the hospital’s labour and delivery unit took over, ensuring the well-being of both mother and baby. The Buchanans were immensely grateful for Edmundson’s actions, with Seth expressing, “He saved us this morning. It was a godsend.” The couple later had the opportunity to thank Edmundson in person as he visited them in their hospital room, where they introduced him to their newborn son, Theodore.
Despite having delivered two other babies before, Edmundson shared that this experience was unlike any other. He acknowledged the unexpected nature of the situation but credited his training for allowing him to act swiftly and decisively. Reflecting on the event, he said, “This one here takes the cake. Like I said, I wasn’t ready for this one, and it caught me by surprise. But my training just kicked in, and I did what I had to do to deliver a baby until staff arrived.”
The heartwarming story of Ashton, Seth, and baby Theodore’s unexpected delivery outside the hospital serves as a reminder of the everyday heroes who go above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of others. In moments of crisis, such acts of kindness and quick thinking can make a significant difference, as seen in this joyful outcome for the Buchanan family.
The touching account of Ashton and Seth’s ordeal, made brighter by the actions of a compassionate security guard, highlights the importance of preparedness and kindness in unexpected situations. As they celebrate the safe arrival of their son, the Buchanans will always carry with them the memory of the stranger who became their guardian angel on a day they will never forget.
