A Florida man has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and domestic battery after allegedly trying to kill his wife while they were out on a boat. The incident took place roughly 33 miles off the coast, resulting in a terrifying ordeal for the victim.

Douglas Scott Naeher was taken into custody on July 21 following the harrowing events that unfolded during what was supposed to be a leisurely boat trip with his wife of three years. According to reports by local outlet ABC7, Naeher’s behaviour took a drastic turn for the worse as they ventured out on the water on Sunday, July 20.

The victim recounted that Naeher’s demeanour seemed off from the start, with signs of anger and uncharacteristic silence. Trouble began when a fishing mishap led to Naeher becoming irate. In an attempt to defuse the situation, the wife separated herself from her husband by getting into the water and holding onto a rope attached to the boat.
However, things took a terrifying turn when Naeher allegedly untied the rope, put the boat in gear, and drove off without her, leaving her stranded in the water. Fearing for her life, the victim believed Naeher was abandoning her to an uncertain fate. Another boat in the vicinity seemingly prompted Naeher to return, but the nightmare was far from over.
Upon re-boarding the boat, the victim was subjected to a vicious attack by Naeher, who reportedly punched and stomped on her multiple times, causing her to lose consciousness. In a desperate bid for survival, she played dead as Naeher dragged her by her hair into the water, where he attempted to strangle her while making chilling threats on her life.
Despite the presence of another boat, Naeher allegedly tried to drive off with the victim in the water, only to be thwarted when she managed to hold on to the boat’s ladder. The victim endured further assaults and attempts to drown her before eventually escaping when the boat returned to the dock.
Following the traumatic ordeal, the victim sought help at the Holmes Beach Police Department and was subsequently treated at Blake Hospital for a concussion, multiple contusions, and severe swelling on her head and face.
Naeher, who fled the scene in his pickup truck, was apprehended the next day and faces serious charges in connection with the horrific incident. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted for further details on the ongoing investigation.
This shocking case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of swift interventions to protect victims from harm. It highlights the courage and resilience displayed by the victim in the face of extreme danger, as well as the swift action taken by law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it is essential to raise awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence and the resources available to support and assist victims in seeking help and safety. Such incidents underscore the urgent need for communities to stand united against all forms of violence and abuse, striving for a society where every individual can live free from fear and harm.
