Eleanor Brannigan, a first-time mother from England, and a fetal medicine consultant are shedding light on the groundbreaking medical intervention that saved the life of their “miracle baby.” Eleanor was 27 weeks pregnant when doctors discovered a buildup of fluid around the lungs and body of her unborn daughter, Eabha.

Describing Eabha as their “special miracle baby,” Eleanor expressed gratitude for her daughter’s fighting spirit and the successful outcome of the challenging pregnancy. The family’s journey was shared with Nottingham University Hospitals, highlighting the critical role of obstetric and fetal medicine consultant, Magdalena Fiolna, in ensuring Eabha’s safe delivery.
Faced with the daunting prospect of potential heart failure for the unborn child due to the fluid accumulation, Eleanor and her partner, Adam Moseley, were presented with three options by Fiolna. The choices included close monitoring with the risk of increased fluid, early delivery at 27 weeks resulting in extreme prematurity, or the innovative approach of draining the fluid through shunts.
Opting for the procedure of permanently draining the fluid, the family travelled to the Fetal Medicine Research Institute in London under Fiolna’s guidance. However, when the shunts ceased to function after a few weeks, a decision was made to proceed with delivery. Eleanor’s waters broke while Fiolna was away, but effective coordination ensured a swift response in handling the situation.
The medical team performed a caesarean section to drain the fluid from Eabha’s lungs, allowing her to breathe normally. By delaying cord clamping, the team facilitated a thorough assessment of the baby’s condition before planning further interventions. Born at 31 weeks, Eabha spent time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) before being able to come home, marking a victorious end to a challenging chapter for the family.
Acknowledging the exceptional care provided by the medical teams, Eleanor expressed her profound gratitude, emphasising the pivotal role played by Fiolna and the collaborative efforts that contributed to Eabha’s successful outcome. She reiterated the sentiment that without timely intervention, the outcome could have been vastly different.
Reflecting on the experience, Eleanor marvelled at the advancements in prenatal care that enabled the life-saving intervention for Eabha. She commended the exemplary support received from the medical professionals and expressed her heartfelt appreciation for their dedication throughout the process.
Eabha, the “miracle baby,” stands as a testament to the incredible advancements in medical science and the unwavering commitment of healthcare providers towards ensuring positive outcomes in challenging circumstances. The remarkable journey of Eleanor, Adam, and baby Eabha serves as an inspiring narrative of hope, resilience, and the profound impact of innovative medical interventions in saving precious lives.
In a world where medical miracles continue to unfold, the story of Eabha’s triumph stands as a beacon of hope and a poignant reminder of the extraordinary capabilities of modern healthcare. The collaborative efforts of dedicated professionals, alongside the unwavering strength of families facing adversity, illuminate the path towards brighter futures for the tiniest and most vulnerable members of our society.
