Over 140 individuals have reportedly fallen ill due to a stomach bug outbreak on a Royal Caribbean International cruise. The cruise ship was carrying a total of 3,914 passengers and 1,266 crew members on a journey from Los Angeles to Mexico spanning from July 4 to July 11.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) disclosed that 134 passengers and 7 crew members experienced symptoms of a gastrointestinal illness during the cruise. The symptoms included diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, as outlined in a press release by the CDC.

While the exact cause of the outbreak remains unidentified, it coincided with the duration of the cruise, commencing on July 4 and ceasing on July 11, coinciding with the onset of reported illnesses. Efforts to ascertain further details from the Royal Caribbean Group are currently underway.
In response to the outbreak, Royal Caribbean International and the crew aboard the ship took proactive measures to contain the spread. These measures included enhancing cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolating affected individuals, collecting stool specimens for additional testing, and collaborating with the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP).
A statement from a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson emphasised the organisation’s commitment to prioritising the health and safety of guests, crew, and the communities they engage with. Rigorous cleaning protocols exceeding public health standards were highlighted as part of their approach to maintaining optimal health and safety aboard their ships.
This incident is not the first of its kind, as a similar occurrence transpired in February when more than 90 individuals aboard a Royal Caribbean International cruise exhibited symptoms of a gastrointestinal illness. The coordinated response by the cruise line and crew at the time mirrored the recent outbreak, showcasing a consistent approach to managing health crises.
It is essential to note the swift actions taken by the authorities and the cruise line to address the situation and minimise the impact on passengers and crew. Transparency and effective communication are crucial during such incidents to ensure the well-being of all individuals on board.
The health and safety protocols implemented by Royal Caribbean International underscore the significance of adhering to stringent sanitation practices in the cruise industry, especially amidst the ongoing health challenges affecting global travel.
As investigations into the root cause of the recent outbreak continue, the cruise industry remains vigilant in upholding the highest standards of health and safety to provide a secure and enjoyable travel experience for passengers worldwide.
