The Queen’s association with the Royal Navy goes back to 2007 when she named the HMS Astute, and she has since been actively involved with the submarine as its sponsor. In addition to her role with the HMS Astute, Queen Camilla also serves as the sponsor for the U.K.’s flagship HMS Wales, and holds positions as Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Navy Medical Service and Naval Chaplaincy Services. General Sir Gwyn Jenkins RM, First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, expressed that Queen Camilla’s appointment as Vice Admiral would strengthen her relationship with the Royal Navy, highlighting the importance of her role.
During the ceremony at the naval base, Queen Camilla was presented with a burgee by Rear Admiral Andy Perks, symbolising her steadfast support for the Royal Navy. The event included inspecting a Guard of Honor and culminated in the official end of the HMS Astute’s first commission, where the Queen participated in traditional Royal Navy customs. Following the formal proceedings, Queen Camilla engaged in a casual garden party with the crew and their families, sharing heartfelt remarks and reflecting on her longstanding association with the submarine.

The Queen’s visit to the naval base in Devonport came after her involvement at Children’s Hospice South West’s Little Bridge House, where she celebrated its 30th anniversary as a dedicated patron. As Queen Camilla prepares to celebrate her 78th birthday, she continues to engage in various royal duties and engagements, showcasing her unwavering commitment to charitable causes and her role within the Royal Family. Her recent appearance at a state banquet honouring France exemplified her grace and elegance, donning the prestigious Belgian Sapphire Tiara previously worn by the late Queen Elizabeth.
