A Russian woman living in a cave with her two daughters in southwestern India is set to be deported after authorities discovered her expired visa. Nina Kutina, 40, along with her two young daughters aged 4 and 6, were found by police in the forest-dense hills of Gokarna, a town in Karnataka State. The woman, originally from Russia, shared with police that she was staying in the forest to worship God and meditate.

During a routine patrol on the evening of July 9, police officers stumbled upon Kutina and her daughters. She informed them that she had been living in the cave on the hill with her children, coming from Goa, where they had been engaged in worship and meditation. Concerned for their safety due to the area’s landslides and poisonous snakes, the authorities convinced Kutina to leave, and they were taken to a retreat center in a nearby village as a precaution.

However, when asked to provide official documentation, Kutina failed to produce valid papers for her and her daughters. It was later found that her passport and visa had expired back in 2017. Despite efforts to reach out to the Russian Embassy in New Delhi, authorities did not receive an immediate response. Hence, Kutina and her children were relocated to a women’s shelter while plans were made for their deportation to Russia.
Further investigations revealed Kutina’s complicated journey which began in 2016 with a business visa to Goa, later overstaying her permitted time. Following a brief departure from India and a visit to Nepal, she returned in 2020, where they had been living in the cave for about a week before being discovered. Tragically, Kutina lost her oldest son to a biking accident in 2024, while her 11-year-old son’s whereabouts remain unknown.
As Kutina recounted her time in the forest with her daughters, she highlighted their survival skills and the happiness they found in nature, creating art, cooking, and staying strong despite the circumstances. Despite expressing her desire to continue living in India, authorities stated that she and her daughters would be sent back to Russia as part of the deportation process.
The entire episode shed light on the challenges faced by Kutina and her daughters as they tried to embrace a simple life close to nature, only to find themselves entangled in legal issues concerning residency and visas. The story serves as a reminder of the complexities faced by individuals living on the fringes of society, seeking solace and peace in unconventional ways.
The authorities, while empathetic towards Kutina’s love for nature and her unconventional lifestyle, emphasized the importance of following legal procedures. The incident highlighted the dangers of living in a cave, especially with young children, and the need to prioritize their safety and well-being above all.
Despite the unfortunate turn of events leading to their impending deportation, Kutina’s story resonates with the broader theme of seeking refuge and connection with the natural world amidst the chaos of modern society. By sharing her experience, she has brought attention to the challenges faced by those who choose to live off the grid and the legal ramifications they may encounter.
